Space-based Solar Power for Defense + Desalination + Energy Independence

The cost of  Space-based solar power (SBSP) is enormous and a major cost based rationale is needed for such a project.  What if SBSP could be used for defense, desalination and energy independence?  If SBSP could solve several strategic problems of the US at the same time then this technology might be cost effective.

I have already explored the possibility of an Airship Powered from Space.  SBSP allows for an airship to be an airborne aircraft carrier that can project military power in a way that is not currently available.  An airborne aircraft carrier may be the perfect tool for combating threats like ISIL abroad.  I actually think this is the least important use of SBSP technology since the US already possesses huge military capacity.

NASA has already explored the use of space-based solar for desalination.  The US is already losing millions of dollars in lost agriculture dollars, especially in California, due to land that does not have enough rainfall due to global warming.  Global warming will only exacerbate this problem.  Agriculture accounts for more or less 1% of total GDP or 170 billion plus.  As global warming decimates agriculture around the world our share of the agricultural market could increase dramatically since we took prudent steps to guarantee our water security early on!

The most obvious use of SBSP is the possibility of endless clean energy.  The National Space Society has already explored this issue in its article Space Solar Power Limitless clean energy from space.  One could argue that the US has been involved in costly wars with little return in Afghanistan and Iraq because of a lack of energy independence.  Energy from space means the US has more strategic freedom.  The US also spends billions of dollars on oil from outside the US that would be better spent on building our own SBSP energy infrastructure.  According to the EIA the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) countries accounted for 56% of U.S. net imports.  This is a massive fiscal bleed that we can solve with SBSP.

The availability of cheap energy may also cause a resurgence of manufacturing in the US.  The US can increasingly use robotic technologies that are energy intensive to offset cheap labor abroad.  The development of SBSP technology means robots in space building the satellite, military robots using the airborne aircraft carrier as a base, and robots in manufacturing that use cheap energy.  Taking the lead in SBSP technology means taking the lead in robotics and taking back the future that now appears lost!

The US is facing major problems including military challenges of a terrorist nature, the destruction of agriculture due to global warming and dependence on foreign oil that forces us into military situation that are a lose/lose.  The US has traditionally used technology to be at the forefront of all nations.  From the Manhattan Project to sending a man to the Moon, the US has stayed ahead through bold technology projects that are only possible at the national level.  The rest of the world is catching up with the US technologically and the time has come for the US to once again focus on a bold project that will assure our economic and military supremacy as well as safeguard our security!  The US is now in a dark place but I see a future in which that US has global supremacy for the next hundred years or more that surpasses any global role we had in the past!

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 730,000 times in 2014. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 31 days for that many people to see it.

50 Advertising Techniques

50 Advertising Techniques Table

1) Altruism – The ad presents an altruistic story and hopes the viewer associates the story with the product and/or service.

2) Analogy – A similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based.

3) Arouse Curiosity – The ad catches the curiosity and therefore the attention of the customer.

4) Bandwagon – Trying to convince viewers that a product is good because “everyone” is buying it; encouraging people to “jump on the bandwagon”.

5) Card Stacking – Telling the facts from one side only.

6) Cartoon Character – An animated character that promotes a product.

7) Children – In most houses, children have a say in every big or small purchase made. Most parents just give in to the tantrums, a fact well known to the advertisers. Out of ten commercials one sees through any medium, 8 have children featured in them who are generally a little more perfect than the target audience. These perfect children then go on to become role-models that have to emulated by other children.

8) Comparison Appeal – This brand is better than other brands of the same product.

9) Deal Appeal – This technique involves making the audience a compelling offer, and telling them exactly how to get it. Key words associated with this technique are “free” and “save”.

10) Emotional Appeal – Writers may appeal to fear, anger or joy to sway their readers. They may also add climax or excitement. This technique is strongly connected to the essay’s mood.

11) Establish Credibility – “I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.”

12) Exaggeration – Exaggerating products and their uses is another of the good advertising techniques and examples of the technique can explain how this works in the favor of the advertiser.

13) Exigency – Creating the impression that your action is required immediately or your opportunity will be lost forever.

14) Facts and Figures – Statistics and objective factual information is used to prove the superiority of the product.

15) Fantasy – Super athletes, superheroes, movie stars, the beautiful, the rich, the powerful, or things associated with them are featured with the hope that the consumer will tend to transfer the qualities of these people to the products and themselves and buy the item.

16) Fear – Using fear to sell a service and/or product.

17) Green – If you buy this product then you are helping the environment.

18) Glittering Generalities – An emotionally appealing phrase so closely associated with highly valued concepts and beliefs that it carries conviction without supporting information or reason.

19) Humor – The use of humor may help people remember the ad and want to buy the product because of the positive association with it.

20) Hyperbole – This is one of the more enjoyable persuasive techniques. It involves completely overstating and exaggerating your point for effect. (Like when your mom says, “I must have asked you a million times to clean your room!” Get it?).

21) Image Advertising–  Presenting a desirable situation or lifestyle in order to convince the viewers that if they use a product, they, too can have this lifestyle; beautiful people.

22) Innuendo – Causing the audience to become wary or suspicious of a competing product and/or service by hinting that negative information may be being kept secret.

23) Irony – Irony is present if the writer’s words contain more than one meaning. This may be in the form of sarcasm, gentle irony, or a pun (play on words). It can be used to add humor or to emphasize an implied meaning under the surface. The writer’s “voice” becomes important here.

24) Jingle or Slogan – A “catchy” song or phrase that helps you remember a product.

25) Lifestyle Appeal – In this technique, an advertisement provides a glimpse from a particular lifestyle or way of living.  The hope is that the audience will desire this lifestyle and transfer that longing to the product.

26) Magic Ingredients – The suggestion that some almost miraculous discovery makes the product exceptionally effective.

27) Mascot – Mascot the audience can identify with like Smokey the Bear.

28) Metaphor – A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.

29) Name Calling Appeal – In this technique, the advertiser compares its product or service to the competition in a way that is favorable to the advertiser.

30) Nostalgia – This appeal implies that this product takes you back to the “good old days” or back to nature, etc.

31) Parallelism – When an author creates a “balanced” sentence by re-using the same word structure, this is called parallelism. Always strive for parallelism when using compound or complex sentences.  Jingles and/or slogans can be improved using parallelism.

32) Patriotism – The suggestion that purchasing this product shows your love of your country.

33) Personification – This technique gives human characteristics to a product, or service.

34) Plain Folks – The product is not elitist and suitable for ordinary people.

35) Promise a Benefit – The ad promises a benefit to the consumer.

36) Red Herring – Highlighting a minor detail as a way to draw attention away from more important details or issues.

37) Repetition – Repeating an element within one advertisement so that viewers will remember the advertisement and will buy the product.

38) Reverse Psychology –  A persuasion technique involving the false advocacy of a belief or behavior contrary to the belief or behavior which is actually being advocated.

39) Rhetorical Question – Sometimes a writer will ask a question to which no answer is required. The writer implies that the answer is obvious; the reader has no choice but to agree with the writer’s point.

40) Savings or Free – You will save money or get something free if you buy this product.

41) Scale – A product looks bigger or smaller in the ad than the actual product.

42) Sensory Appeal – The product tastes good, looks good, or feels good.  Sounds or pictures appealing to the senses are featured.

43) Shocking the Viewer – An effective method of advertising, shocking viewer gets them more interested in the product, because it is a shift in their comfort zone.

44) Simple Solutions – One product and/or service solves several problems at the same time.

45) Slice of Life Appeal – A problem is presented in a “realistic” manner by “real” people.

46) Snob Appeal – The use of the product makes the customer part of an elite group with a luxurious and glamorous life style.

47) Testimonial Appeal – In this technique, a celebrity or authority figure endorses the product.  This could be a celebrity, sports star, or “professional”.

48) Transfer – Words and ideas with positive connotations are used to suggest that the positive qualities should be associated with the product and the user.

49) Weasel Words – “Weasel words” are used to suggest a positive meaning without actually really making any guarantee.

50) Word Choice – Is a person “slim” or “skinny”? Is an oil spill an “incident” or an “accident”?

Airship Powered from Space

Airship Powered from Space Graphic

DARPA wants airborne aircraft carriers.   The airborne aircraft carriers would be a platform for drones.  Radley has suggested airships be used to act as a catchment for solar energy beamed from solar satellites in space.  The power would then be transferred from the airship to the Earth.  How about beaming power to the airship which is used by the airship!  The airship can use this collected power to stay aloft, for propulsion and to power up sensors as well as command and control equipment.  DARPA has already done the conceptual work of making an airship a giant sensor.

The power collected could be used not only to power the airship but to recharge the drones the airship services.  Microdrones acting in swarms would need to be battery powered anyway and would give the US military another type of drone capability to supplement our current larger drones.  Since power is available to stay aloft then the airship can be much smaller than a normal airship that requires more helium to stay afloat.  A smaller airship provides a smaller target and is therefore less vulnerable to enemy missiles.  The microdrones could also be used to act as a missile defense system.  The drone(s) intercepts the missile and explodes in the proximity of the missile.  The microdrones used as a defensive system ironically mimic the behavior of actual bee drones!

The airship’s sensor system can be used for two types of targeting.  The sensor can be used to aim microdrones at targets on the ground that are of interest for further observation.  Microdrones with explosives can be use for exact target elimination.  The US already has redundant airpower that is powerful but has the political problem of collateral damage.  Current US power is excellent for military purposes but not as capable for “police” actions.  What the US lacks is some sort of automated system that can bring more or less the target elimination capabilities of an infantry soldier from the sky and this is what cheap disposable microdrones can provide.  Infantry of course has the disadvantages of the loss of life among US soldiers and dealing with the complex political machinations of putting boots on the ground.  The airship’s sensor system can also be used in conjunction with microdrones to provide target information that the solar satellite can use to target its solar beam.  However, a death ray from above is not really what the US needs.  The US has a plethora of very powerful weapons that can deliver death from above but lack the accuracy needed for police type missions abroad.  The US has cruise missiles, huge bombers, bunker busters and even nuclear weapons.

What the US does not have is the ability to take out a single tank or even a single soldier surrounded by civilians.  Since one of the new threats is terrorists that use civilian populations as human shields, an exact targeting system and target delivery system from above allows attacks on terrorists in situations in which infantry was the only option in the past.  Drones working alone or in conjunction can provide optics that focus the solar beam from space to ground targets.

The laser drone would be a specialized drone that is torus shaped and has some sort of lens or energy field in the center that can take the solar beam from a satellite and aim incredible power at a very small target.  A laser drone could conceivably provide laser capability that can kill a single terrorist who thinks he is safe under tons of rock in a cave but is suddenly killed in front of his men!  Bombing caves may even create camaraderie but seeing your fearless leader killed in front of you in your sanctuary may be more effective when dealing with tribal groups that cluster around charismatic leaders!

The laser drone and microdrones with explosives would be used together and have an order of battle.  The laser drone creates the opening and the microdrones with explosives then go through the opening.  This means the drones with explosives can go into areas underground or in bunkers that would be very difficult for an infantry solider to breach.  In the short run, observation microdrones would be the first area of research and development.  The observation microdrones could be the size of insects and be barely visible.  When the observation microdrone finds a target then that microdrone calls in the explosive microdrone that would be much larger, perhaps around four feet in diameter, and quite visible.  Explosive microdrones with explosives would be the next area of research and development after observation microdrones that aid infantry have been perfected.  Drones with solar energy focusing capability, which would probably be quite large, would be the final type of drone developed.  There might even be a piggy back battery powering system. The satellite powers the airship.  The airship powers the explosive microdrones.  The explosive microdrones power the observation drones.  The US does not need a death ray from space but precise target elimination from above is preferable to invasion in many terrorist scenarios.  A laser drone for underground targets and an exploding microdrone for targets above ground may be the missing element in the US spectrum of military options!

The Chinese may be going forward with my idea!

There are obvious ways to make the balloons stealthier,  A swarm of balloons would be a cheap way to overload air defenses.  Balloons operate in the range above that of air fighters and below that of satellites.  Balloons operate above the range of fighter aircraft and below the range of satellite thus adding a layer to an in depth defense and offense in the skies. If we used half our ingenuity as humans for more worthwhile projects we could create a paradise. Obviously the same technology could be used to beam solar energy from space to the benefit of mankind. Drones could be used to beam solar energy more precisely to isolated areas.  Cheap energy for all. Or more likely cheap energy for a profit.  The US is ruled by a military industrial complex so the US is structurally incapable of using it’s considerable technological smarts for anything but war.  The Chinese are more logical but in reaction to the constant threats by the US to China’s survival focus on military uses of technology rather than more useful civilian uses.

Make money not war!

Well I talk to an empty room!  Maybe I am too smart for my own good as I have been told my whole life.  LOL!

Kate the Devil Girl

Kate the Devil Girl

The first volume of The House of Mystery was a horror anthology.  Kate the Devil Girl never made the cover The House of Mystery but was a back story that had a loyal following in the seventies and DC has collected her six appearances into a single volume.  Kate the Devil Girl is a normal high school student until she finds a demonic wand that gives her various demonic powers including super strength, limited invulnerability and the ability to shoot magical flames from her hands.  The catch is that every time she picks up her wand, she has evil impulses that become stronger and stronger and she is in danger of becoming a full blown demon and therefore also more powerful.

At the end of the adventure, Kate always resolves to never use the wand again but there is always some emergency that forces her to use the wand again. In her third appearance, the wand accidentally absorbs the life force of a Cambodian exchange student and the head of the wand can now talk and give her advice but mostly the wand urges Kate to figure out a way to return him to his human form.  In the sixth and final appearance of Kate the Devil Girl the various plot lines that had developed were not resolved.  Many people thought that Kate the Devil Girl would become a Vertigo title eventually. In this incarnation, the various loose plot lines of the original would be resolved but this never happened.  Perhaps this reprint means new adventures of Kate the Devil Girl are possible in the future.
