Bar Silver – silver bars, usually weighing several pounds each

Barbecue – ship’s cook

Blaggards – aka blackguards, a scoundrel or jerk

Execution Dock – where the gallows are located in a sea port

French Leave – sneak off and abandon your shipmates, cowardly

Gallows – framework with a rope noose to hang criminals

Gig – small rowboat used to go back and forth from ship to dock or shore

Guinea – English gold coin

Gunner – sailor who fires the cannons

Hand – to tie sails to the yardarms

Hands – sailors

Have the Wind of – to be in a better position than another person

Heave – pull

Honest Air – sweet, pure air or not swampy

Irons – handcuffs and shackles

Jolly Roger – pirate flag, usually has a skull and crossed bones

Keelhauling – to drag a person across or along the keel of a ship, often fatal

Lad – a boy, aka laddy

Leeward – aka lee shore, the wind blows toward this side, bad position

Life or death on a lee shore – Dead men tell no tales

Lubber – land lover, not a sailor, a wimpy person

Magistrate – local officer or judge

Make Sail – unroll and put sails down

Make Terms – agree to rules

Maroon – abandon on a deserted island, a person who was abandoned

Matey – aka mate, another sailor on your ship who is your friend

Mess – the place where meals are eaten

Messmate – sailor on your ship, someone you share meals with

Musket – gun or rifle which requires loading after every shot, uses gunpowder and shot

Mutiny – when members of a crew or army overthrow their officers

Overboard – to all over the rail of a ship into the water

Parley – discussion between enemies

Pieces of Eight – Spanish silver coin

Quartermaster – officer in charge of assigning rooms and supplies

Reef – to tie part of a sail to the yardarms

Roundshot – bullets or musketballs, shot

Saber – cavalry sword with a curved blade

Sauce – back talk

Seafaring – working or traveling on the sea

Sealegs – ability to walk steadily on the deck of a moving ship

Seaman – a sailor

Sequin – Italian gold coin

Shipmate – sailor on your ship, a friend

Shiver My Timbers – Scary, makes my bones shake

Smart as Paint – smart, fresh, new, honest

Spanish Main – Caribbean Sea, area controlled by Spain

Squall – storm

Square – fair, honest

Steer – to guide a ship by using its rudder and ship’s wheel

Swab – a sailor, usually one of low rank

Swing – hang by the neck

Swivel Gun – small cannon whose aim can be changed easily

Tall Ship – any ship with tall masts

Trim Sail – adjust the sails

Weigh anchor – lift the anchor from the water so a ship can move
